(Current as of 29 April 2019)
The Aurora V ferry, which previously serviced the Wallaroo to Lucky Bay route between 2012 and 2015, has been secured on a 10-year rolling lease arrangement and will be returned to the Spencer Gulf.
The vessel is registered under the Australian flag with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which provides legal and international recognition of the ship’s nationality, however, she is currently anchored in Venezuela.
Due to political instability in that nation, the company has been unable to secure a port declaration from Venezuelan authorities which is required under international shipping protocols for any vessel to sail.
The company is eager to ensure the ferry service is financially viable and offers a valuable service for customers on both sides of the Gulf.
SeaSA is a private company and does not receive any government funding to operate the ferry.
While at this stage, the company is unable to provide any specific detail on the timing of the ferry’s return, it is hoped that it will be back in operation before summer. The company will provide updates to the community when possible.
